Jammu & Kashmir made a dominant start to their maiden Ranji Trophy final, reaching 284/2 at stumps on Day 1 against Karnataka at the KSCA Hubli Cricket Ground on Tuesday, thanks to a sublime century from Shubham Pundir and strong top-order contributions.
After winning the toss and opting to bat on a batting-friendly surface, J&K’s batters made full use of the conditions to put the eight-time champions under pressure.

J&K began cautiously against Karnataka’s new-ball attack, with Qamran Iqbal and Yawer Hassan negotiating the early movement. However, Prasidh Krishna provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Iqbal for 6, with KL Rahul taking a sharp catch at second slip.

Shubham Pundir then joined Yawer, and the duo stitched together a solid partnership to stabilise the innings. By lunch, J&K were well placed at 104/1, with Yawer and Pundir unbeaten.
The pair continued to build after lunch, completing their 100-run stand in the 39th over. Yawer reached his half-century first, while Pundir followed soon after with a boundary off Vidyadhar Patil. Karnataka finally broke the partnership when Prasidh trapped Yawer for a well-made 88 off 150 balls, which included 13 fours.
At tea, J&K were 178/2, with Pundir unbeaten on 64 and captain Paras Dogra on 9.
The final session belonged entirely to Shubham Pundir. Resuming from 64*, he paced his innings beautifully and brought up his maiden Ranji Trophy final century with a six over deep mid-wicket. He became the first J&K batter to score a century in a Ranji Trophy final.
Abdul Samad provided valuable support, scoring an unbeaten 52, as the duo added an unbroken 105-run partnership to take J&K close to the 300-run mark. Dogra was forced to retire hurt shortly after the tea break after being struck by a sharp bouncer from Vijaykumar Vyshak, but it did little to slow down the scoring rate.
Karnataka’s bowlers struggled to make inroads even after the second new ball became available, with Prasidh Krishna the only bowler to strike, finishing the day with figures of 2/36.
This is Jammu & Kashmir’s first-ever Ranji Trophy final, while Karnataka are chasing their ninth title. With two set batters at the crease and plenty of batting left, J&K are in a commanding position heading into Day 2.
Play resumes at 9:30 AM IST on Wednesday.
